Effects Crew Manager

Wētā FX is looking for a Effects Crew Manager to join our Shots Realm team.

About the FX dept

Our FX team is comprised of more than 150 of the world's leading FX TDs.

Collectively they help to solve a diverse variety of VFX problems, working in close partnership with other departments across Wētā FX. FX is integral to Wētā's R&D efforts, pipeline and workflows, which all continue to adapt to the increasing focus on FX-driven VFX.

The Crew Manager is responsible for monitoring and maintaining crew wellbeing. The role encompasses facilitating professional development and ensuring crew are informed, supported, and enthusiastic with their role in Wētā FX. The Crew Manager fosters a culture of high performance and inclusiveness that aligns with Wētā FX’s wider vision of crew responsibility and accountability within the studio.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and building a team who sit at the juncture between creativity and technology in a company that continues to push the boundaries of the VFX craft.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Establish and maintain a high performing, high morale, resilient department culture where conditions are optimized for crew to do outstanding work in conjunction with the HODs and Department Manager.
  • Identify, develop and implement improvements to department processes, encouraging a culture of creativity and progressive improvement.
  • Along with the Department HODs, ensure that all crew within the department receive timely, meaningful feedback on their work and behaviour as part of an ongoing dialogue that supports their professional growth and development.
  • Help crew set goals for individual improvement and to promote Wētā FX’s overall strategy.
  • Along with the Department HODs, liaise with the T&C Human Resources representative for contract renewals, promotions and any crew concerns.
  • Along with the Department HODs, recruit highly talented artists, identifying candidates who are a good fit for Wētā’s culture and who help us to create strong show teams.
  • Monitor crew training needs, organizing training and professional development as needed.
  • In conjunction with the HODs and DM organize, coordinate and assist the facilitation of departmental meetings (including but not limited to progress updates, demonstrations, planning and retrospective meetings).

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to get results through others without having direct control over those resources.
  • Has the soft skills required to support and nurture relationships between crew members, managers and Heads of Departments, and to navigate potentially difficult conversations to create positive outcomes.
  • A proven ability to work successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and skillsets.
  • Highly organized.
