Weta Digital Summer Internships

After a very successful intake last year, we are very pleased to again be offering Summer Internships across a variety of roles.

Departments confirmed are: Motion Capture, Creatures, Layout , Animation and IT.

Our Layout team is looking for a summer intern. Our layout team is responsible for preparing scenes for downstream artists. This includes scene assembly, set dressing, working with CG cameras and motion data.

Ideally we would love for you to have experience:

  • Skills with Maya - skills in camera, modelling, animation and rendering
  • Comprehension of photographic composition and understanding of cameras
  • Solid understanding of matchmove concepts
  • Knowledge of compositing concepts

We are particularly looking for candidates:

  • with good communication skills & an eye for composition
  • who demonstrate passion and dedication

Familiarity with Linux helpful.


The Animation team is looking for a Summer Artist Intern to work alongside our amazing animators.

The Ideal Candidate would:

  • Have a passion for animation, demonstrated through your showreel
  • Enjoy working collaboratively and welcome feedback.
  • Have experience animating in Maya
  • Have experience with motion capture and/or facial animation
  • Good problem solving and communication skills

Familiarity with Linux helpful.


The Motion Capture team is responsible for capturing performances that bring digital characters to life. The work in this team is interesting and varied.

The ideal candidate has a strong interest in motion capture, film making and animation and is comfortable in a highly technical environment.

Desired skills include the following:

  • A specific interest in motion capture
  • Experience with optical motion capture
  • Skills with Motionbuilder and Maya
  • Good communication skills

We are particularly looking for candidates:

  • Who demonstrate passion and dedication for filmmaking

Familiarity with Linux helpful.


The Creatures team are looking for a Creatures Intern for a summer artist internship. Our Creatures team is responsible for creating animation rigs(puppets) for animators and the deformed/simulated skin and costume for lighting and rendering. We are looking for someone both creatively and technically inclined.

Ideally we would love for you to have an understanding of the following:

  • Basic understanding of the visual effects workflow
  • Understanding of the principals of rigging and animation
  • The ability to learn quickly and understand technical issues
  • Scripting and coding knowledge a plus

We are particularly looking for candidates:

  • With good communication skills
  • A passion for filmmaking

Familiarity with Linux helpful.


Weta Digital IT are offering the opportunity to intern with a friendly, diverse and talented team, running one of New Zealand’s largest (and in our opinion, most exciting) IT function and private data centre.

Your interests include either infrastructure / devops engineering, software development, or technical support / service desk – or perhaps you’d like to explore the different options?

Ideally we would love for you to have an understanding of the following:

  • Cross-platform knowledge, familiarity with Linux (or any other UNIX)
  • Computer hardware
  • Scripting (shell, Python etc.)
  • Academic background or experience in computer science, computer engineering, information systems or related discipline

We are particularly looking for candidates:

  • Who are good communicators
  • Who demonstrate passion and dedication
  • With experience/understanding of at least one structured programming language
  • With knowledge of advanced computing concepts, e.g. networking, storage, monitoring, database
