    • Building good relationships with show production, central production and adjacent departments.

    Support Department Production Managers with:

    • Providing a Motion Summary on a weekly basis for each show in Motion.
    • Maintaining comprehensive bid documents.
    • Providing any bespoke reports requested on a specific show.

    Needs to know and have:

    • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
    • Has at least five years practical VFX production management experience
    • A comprehensive knowledge of Motion Department workflow

    Production Engineering supports and builds software that helps our crew make movies. One of our responsibilities is the virtual production system used for motion capture shoots. As a support technical director, you will act as a liaison between software developers and both on-stage motion capture operators and off-stage artists, interacting directly with all parties. You will help motion capture operators and artists learn our tools and workflows and communicate problems back to the developers when necessary.

    You will:

    • Provide frontline motion capture support at a remote facility in Los Angeles.
    • Troubleshoot software and liaise with the developer team to get issues resolved.
    • Work with developers to identify underlying causes and propose operator-friendly solutions.
    • Work with the release manager to test new software and workflows.
    • Work with operators to demonstrate new software and workflows and gather feedback.

    You must:

Extensive experience in compiler design is required, including parsing, typechecking, intermediate representations, and code generation.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background including program analysis, program transformation and optimization, and programming language design. Familiarity with shading languages and computer graphics is desirable. Experience with high performance systems that include multi-threading, vectorization, and GPU acceleration is a plus.

    Responsibilities:

    • Accelerate shading performance in Manuka, a world-class renderer for cinematic visual effects and animation.
    • Work with shading department to develop new shader authoring techniques.
    • Improve compiler infrastructure, including intermediate representation and code generation.

    • Investigate vectorization and GPU code generation.
    • Improve and maintain existing code to improve quality, reliability, and maintainability.

    Show Production Manager

    Job Purpose

    Responsible for overall show schedule and for managing everything required for efficient running of the Show. Reports to VFX Producer.

    Needs to do

    • Create an overall show schedule for all phases of production.
    • Schedule and plan resource requirements with the VFX Producer, VFX Supervisor and Resource Manager to plan an effective and efficient approach to completing the show within contractually agreed deadlines.
    • Track overall Show Schedule (ie. Shots/Assets). Ensure the VFX team understands the goals and milestone deadlines for assets, shots, sequences and any R&D projects required.
    • Responsible for hitting scheduled targets and working with both department production & show production to ensure the schedule is on track.
    • Provide regular milestone reports and liaise with departments regarding milestones
    • Schedule new turnovers and attend turnover meetings
    • Input shots into Shotgun as required
    • Establish workflow for organizing and tracking incoming data and then hand off to PA, monitor workflow through out project
    • Report Show progress and any delays to VFX Producer
    • Inform all necessary parties of any possible/actual delays, reasons and what is being done to avoid further delays. Also, to notify all departments who might be affected by the delay. Adjust schedule accordingly.
    • Assist the VFX Producer with the weekly client reports. Liaise with the VFX Producer to ensure the information contained within is accurate at all times.
    • Arrange and/or attend senior VFX Supervisor reviews & Director reviews
    • If required, communicate with external vendors for Stereo deliveries.
    • Manage production team, ensuring roles and responsibilities are clearly defined. Mentor Production P.A’s.
    • Request overtime as necessary for artists to hit their targets. Maintain oversight on the amount of overtime worked, ensuring overtime at all times is productive.
    • If requested by VFX Producer, liaise with client to arrange reviews, meetings, conference calls, playlists, deliveries, discuss schedule etc.
    • Forecast resources for the show using the Forecasting Spreadsheet if required by VFX Producer
    • Track Actual Days vs Bid days on all stages of the pipeline

    Needs to know and have

    • 2+ years Sequence Management experience in VFX or 2+ years previous experience in VFX Production Management
    • Proven scheduling experience with a knowledge of Shotgun
    • Good knowledge of Excel
    • Good communication skills – including interaction with show production team, department groups and supervisors
    • Able to manage clients
    • Organised and methodical in approach to work
    • Calm and positive demeanor

The Shots R&D department provides production tools and work flows for the FX, Lighting, Comp and Matte Painting departments, and solutions that interconnect these departments with other groups in the company.     Candidates will ideally have at least 3 years of feature film experience and display the following attributes:

    Essential skills:

    • Experience in shading and look developing for photo-realistic feature films.
    • Strong LookDev skills (both artistically and technically), with an excellent understanding of physically based shading & rendering.
    • Ability to come up with creative, efficient rendering solutions for a wide variety of assets
    • Ability to manage multiple assets at the same time, and put them seamlessly together in a visually coherent solution
    • Familiarity with Maya and Linux.
    • Experience with all aspects of the rendering pipeline.
    • Strong communication, task management and organisational skills.
    • Ability to implement both technical and artistic solutions in order to efficiently handle complexity

    Preferential skills:

    • Experience leading teams or small groups of artists
    • Knowledge of Python scripting
    • Shader writing experience

    Within the Shaders Department at Weta, the work we undertake requires areas of specialised experience and focus; for example Environments, Materials, Characters & FX.     The Rendering Research Group at Weta Digital is seeking a Rendering Researcher to take a leading role in the development of rendering technology at Weta Digital. A deep understanding of a wide range of rendering technologies is required, such as light transport, importance sampling, volume rendering, realistic material models, shading, and geometry processing. The ideal candidate will have extensive software engineering expertise, proven research contributions, and project leadership experience.

    Responsibilities

    • Research and develop new rendering algorithms, such as light transport (path tracing with importance sampling), volume rendering, etc.
    • Design and implement physically realistic material models for hair, skin, and other materials using multi-layer BSDFs, importance sampling, and subsurface scattering.
    • Adapt the latest research results into practical, production-quality code.
    • Implement core rendering systems with a focus on high performance, multi threading, scalability, and robustness.
    • Analyse and optimize system performance.
    • Improve and maintain existing code to improve quality, reliability, and maintainability.
    • Proactively test new and existing features to ensure the highest levels of quality.
    • Provide hands-on user support. Find and fix bugs. Author high quality internal and end-user documentation.
    • Share senior project leadership responsibilities, such as planning and tracking development tasks, engaging with users, and collaborating with other departments.

    Required Qualifications

    • Masters or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field
    • 3+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
    • World-class rendering research expertise.
    • A solid foundation in software engineering, including object-oriented programming.
    • Fluency in C++ and experience with other languages such as Python.
    • Extensive experience in performance analysis and optimization of highly parallel, scalable systems.
    • Ability to work well on a self-directed team in a rapidly changing, deadline-oriented environment.
    • A team-oriented, customer-focused mindset.

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Extensive research and/or experience in either volumetrics rendering or materials
    • GPU programming expertise (CUDA or OpenCL) and experience with interactive rendering algorithms.
    • Experience in film or video game production.
    • Familiarity with Linux and programming tools such as Valgrind, Vtune, git, and so on
