The Special Projects team within Wētā FX is looking to hire a Senior Developer with a strong background in Unreal Engine software development, with an emphasis on developing tools to integrate the Unreal Editor with our linear content workflows and processes.
Special Projects is focused on developing innovative pipelines, tools, and content using real-time game engine technologies. Our goal is to enable creative partners to achieve their vision using those tools, with a focus on producing uncompromising visual work.
In this role, you’ll be close to the creative process, working together with artists to develop tools that have an immediate impact on their workflows in Unreal Engine. You’ll be closely involved in the strategic planning of our technology roadmap, bringing valuable insight on common issues faced in real-time content production pipelines. You’ll also be a trusted source for development best practices, both within the department and outside it, with a desire to continue learning more about new features and tools within the engine.
This role is a one-year fixed-term contract based in our Wellington, New Zealand office.
What you’ll do:
Develop, maintain, and refine tools that integrate Unreal Engine with linear content workflows
Write clear, documented, and maintainable code in C++, Python, and Blueprint
Work collaboratively with teams of artists and filmmakers to understand their workflows and develop solutions that serve their needs with an outstanding user experience
Be an outspoken evangelist for development best practices in Unreal Engine
What you’ll bring:
Significant experience creating tools for the Unreal Editor, with strong knowledge of the various common extensions points available to developers for extending core Unreal Editor systems
Strong software engineering skills, including the ability to design, implement, debug, and optimize software with minimal oversight
Significant experience working with C++, Python, and Blueprint within Unreal Engine
Extensive experience building tools that interact with Unreal Engine’s linear content systems
Familiarity with the different methods of tool management and delivery available within the Unreal Engine ecosystem
Experience scripting asset import workflows within Unreal Engine
Solid understanding of asset formats typically used in game development, with experience working with USD a plus
Production experience with Perforce, Subversion, or Git
A genuine love and curiosity for the world of real-time graphics and game engine development within the world of visual effects
A love for learning and a desire to share your knowledge
Familiarity with common CI/CD tools like Horde, Jenkins, or GitLab CI/CD a plus
