Associate Software Engineer

Wētā FX Engineering Department is seeking an enthusiastic Associate Engineer to join our in-house Scene Description team!

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wētā FX Scene Description team, working on a range of in-house and third-party Scene Description technologies; including Pixar’s Universal Scene Description (USD). Our mission is to seamlessly transport large scale virtual worlds from the beginning of our pipeline all the way to final lighting and rendering. You will contribute to maintaining backend tools and technologies, as well as front-end user tools and scripts. Your work will involve triaging issues, identifying and resolving bugs and bottlenecks, implementing new features, and much more.

This role will be based in Wellington, New Zealand.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Triage Issues from various support queues.
  • Participate in design and code reviews.
  • Debug complex issues involving workflows across multiple systems.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and open communication with developers and users across the studio.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, integration, deployment, and support of a variety of backend and front-end systems relating to Scene Description technologies.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Education: BA/BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related engineering field.
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Curiosity: A desire to deeply understand how things work.
  • Experience: Preferred 1+ year of related work experience and/or internship experience.
  • Teamwork: Ability to function in a hybrid team setting and effectively collaborate with engineers and users across different locations.

You Might Also Have:

  • Familiarity with VFX pipelines, DCCs and/or Games development
  • Linux Experience
  • Hands-on experience with debugging or profiling tools such as GDB, vtune, Tracy, etc.
