This entry-level role is designed for motivated graduates and early career artists who enjoy both creative and technical work. As an ATD, you’ll learn how a worldclass VFX pipeline operates while contributing to real film projects. You’ll work across a variety of teams, building broad generalist skills with a strong technical and creative foundation that supports long-term career growth in visual effects.

Assistant Technical Directors play an vital role in keeping production running smoothly. You’ll support artists, leads, and supervisors, learn studio tools and workflows, and gain an understanding of how departments collaborate to deliver complex visual effects at scale.

The Role

All Assistant Technical Directors begin with a structured onboarding and learning period, introducing Wētā FX’s pipeline, tools, and production workflows. Following this, ATDs join a flexible ATD pool and are assigned to projects and departments based on studio needs.

This role is designed as a foundational position within Wētā FX. ATDs are encouraged to explore different departments and disciplines, helping them identify a specialization that aligns with their strengths and interests. As skills and experience grow, strong performers may progress into a Junior role within their chosen field, supporting a clear pathway from entry-level learning to long-term career development.

Success in this role comes from curiosity, initiative, adaptability, and a resourceful approach to problem-solving. ATDs are supported to learn quickly, take ownership of tasks, and thrive in a collaborative, fastpaced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with a range of tasks across multiple creative and technical departments
  • Support artists, leads, and supervisors to help meet production deadlines
  • Learn, document, and apply pipeline tools and workflows
  • Test new tools, technology, and workflows, providing clear feedback
  • Troubleshoot issues and contribute to practical solutions
  • Build positive, collaborative relationships across teams

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For

  • Experience with 3D and/or 2D software such as Houdini, Maya, or Nuke
  • Interest in learning tools, workflows, and pipelines to support creative work
  • A relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and/or prior VFX experience or internships
  • Passion for VFX and Film Making
  • Basic understanding of the VFX production pipeline
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • A proactive, organised, and collaborative working style
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
